Introducing Acupuncture

Acupuncture and its Benefits

Acupuncture may be helpful for your mind, body and spirit. Acupuncture can help in treating any condition which makes you feel off-balance or unwell. This is because the aim of acupuncture is to help you in rebalancing so that you feel greater wellbeing and you are assisted in healing, both physically and emotionally.

Because we all react very differently to trauma, acupuncture will treat whatever presents in the individual patient, both physical and emotional. The aim is for any patient to be listened to. Their signs and symptoms, as well the information on their pulse and other examinations, will be put together to lead to the right diagnosis and treatment for that particular individual.

Following a traumatic event like the loss of a baby, the energy in the body may be blocked. Acupuncture is aimed at restoring the flow of energy, thereby restoring the body’s ‘qi’ or energy.

Here, Margaret Rawlinson, acupuncturist and yoga therapist, explains how acupuncture works and how it might help you – physically and emotionally – following the trauma of losing your baby.

Acupuncture and your Physical Wellbeing

Following pregnancy and delivery, you are likely to experience imbalances of hormones as well as a variety of other physical effects.

Acupuncture can help to reduce the physical effects of pregnancy and delivery, helping your body to heal more quickly and aiding your recovery in the following ways:

  • Reducing pain you may be experiencing following pregnancy, labour and delivery (including caesarean section)
  • Improving your physical strength and stamina
  • Restoring your ordinary physical rhythm, including your menstrual cycle
  • Improving your energy levels, promoting sleep and hormone balance

Your acupuncturist will likely want to see you on more than one occasion. At your initial appointment s/he will take your pulses and listen to your history and treat the relevant acupuncture points to achieve balance. In treating you individually, s/he will discuss with you the number of appointments it may be beneficial for you to have to experience the benefits of healing with acupuncture.

Acupuncture and your Emotional Wellbeing

According to Chinese Medicine, loss and grief affects the heart  and qi (“shen” or “spirit”). Acupuncture can address the impact of grief and soothe, harmonise and rebalance qi. In particular, acupuncture can help with your emotional recovery by promoting your emotional and spiritual wellbeing in the following ways:

  • Relieving stress and emotional trauma
  • Calming your mind and body
  • Allowing you to experience more peace
  • Promoting mental clarity
  • In particular, Five Element acupuncture may assist specifically in treating grief, depression, fear and anger which you may be suffering following the loss of your baby.
